Professional Corrective Exercise
Over time, we adopt poor positions in our everyday activities that lead to a misalignment of the musculoskeletal structure, otherwise known as bad posture. For example, slouching may lead to a forward head, which puts strain on the neck. It can result in rounded shoulders, which can lead to an over-stretching of the upper spinal ligaments, and in more severe cases, an eventual "Dowager's hump" (curvature of the upper spinal column). How often do we hear "stand up straight", and with good reason!
If left unchecked, inadequate posture will result in muscular imbalance, i.e., tight muscles in some areas, and loose in others. Some muscles may weaken, resulting in an imbalance in other areas to over-compensate. Others may not work at all. Compromised movements in one part of the body may slowly lead to symptoms developing in other parts. For example, lower back pain is often attributed to some recent movement, when it's most likely the result of a series of issues.
The goal of a corrective exercise program is to bring the body back into postural alignment. Since there are no two bodies alike, there is no "one size fits all" program. At Sweat, our corrective exercise trainers develop customized programs based on a detailed system of measurements, testing and assessment for strength and function. Our individualized programs include stretching, joint mobilization techniques and strength and conditioning exercises to retrain the muscles and undo the damage from years of bad posture and faulty movements. Sometimes it's necessary to take a few steps back in order to move forward. A corrective exercise program provides the foundation to achieve optimal performance.
